Who Shaped Lichtenstein's Vision
According to [Apollo Magazine](https://apollo-magazine.com/roy-lichtenstein-whitney-museum-cartoons-mondrian-purism/), Lichtenstein was not operating in a vacuum. He was actively responding to earlier artistic revolutions, absorbing and subverting their visual strategies. His work engaged deeply with both European modernism and American commercial culture.
• Mondrian: De Stijl geometric abstraction and primary color logic (directly referenced in his late paintings)
• Purism (Le Corbusier, Ozenfant): machine-age clarity and clean form
• American comic books and newspaper strips: the visual source material he elevated
• Abstract Expressionism: which he deliberately critiqued and parodied through mechanical precision
• Commercial printing and advertising: the industrial image world he transformed into fine art
